After spending days in jail, the secretary for Digital Communications at State House Dennis Itumbi has been freed on bail.
Itumbi was earlier today released on a bail of Ksh 100,000. This comes after a chief magistrate in Milimani Law Court dismissed an application by the state that sought to detain Itumbi for nine more days. Senior Resident Magistrate Zainabu Abdul directed him to report to the investigating officer at Muthaiga police station once a week in the next 14days. The court also required Itumbi to surrender his passport as a guarantee that he will not flee the country.
However, the investigation team has not yet recorded statements from 256 members of a Whatsapp group, which Itumbi is said to be part of according to the prosecution. The State claimed the assassination letter was shared to the group and members are being probed. Itumbi's lawyers Katwa Kigen and Moses Chelenga opposed an application by the prosecution to detain their client on grounds that no statement had been recorded from the witnesses. The court was told that the investigations were not complete in a case that needs a conclusive report. His case will be mentioned on July 22 to ascertain the progress of the investigations.Itumbi was arrested on July 3 for ties to a letter about the alleged assassination of the Deputy President William Ruto.
