County driver has been arrested in connection with the abduction of two Cuban doctors by Al Shabaab militia in Mandera County.

Kenya Police spokesman Charles Owino confirmed the incident that happened on Friday, where a police officer guarding the doctors was shot to death.

Report shows that two salon cars blocked the county vehicle carrying the doctors to their work station, following several shots in the air by the gunmen, who ambushed the county vehicle and took the doctors with them, after killing the police officer.

KTN news reported that the doctors (Landy Rodriguez -a surgeon and Herera Correa -general practitioner) had settled in well at the Mandera Referral Hospital where they had been working in the past year.

Mandera town is about a kilometer away from the main Kenya- Somalia border.

Security sources indicate that the militia crossed over to Somalia with their captives.

Mandera County Governor Ali Roba has condenmed the incident.

The abducted doctors are among 100 Cuban specialists who arrived in the country in June 2018.

Most local medics had fled the area in fear of terror attacks.

This comes in the wake of de-radicalization campaign in Mandera, that seek to stop youth from joining the Al Shabaab.
