The controversial preacher ‘Yesu wa Tongaren’ has presented himself to police in Bungoma. Addressing the press in Bungoma, ‘Yesu wa Tongaren’ whose real name is Eliud Wekesa claimed that his lawyers are the sun and moon, saying he has done nothing wrong and does not have anything to hide.
The leader claims to be Jesus and many of his followers are family members. ‘Yesu wa Tongaren’ has been in the limelight for claiming to be Jesus, causing funny comments from Kenyans online. During Easter, Kenyan netizens wanted to crucify him with some saying they already had nails for his crucifixion. The preacher refuted the comments, saying he will not be crucified.
This comes as the government continues to look into religious groups with extreme teachings like Paul Mackenzi’s New Life International Church, which has been linked to over 100 deaths of his followers.
The Probe into religious groups with extremist teachings
Yesterday, Cabinet Secretary for Interior Security Kithure Kindiki explained that more mass graves have been identified in Shakahola, Kilifi, where it is believed Mackenzie’s followers were buried.
Speaking on the ongoing exhumation process in the area, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said, “I am afraid we have many graves. The damage is quite significant. 20 mass graves are currently being opened and the process is far from over.” He added, “ This was a highly organized crime.”
This comes as more families come out to speak on losing loved ones to the controversial Pastor Paul Mackenzi’s church. The Good News International Church leader convinces his followers to fast to death to meet Jesus.
Over a hundred bodies have so far been exhumed in Shakahola, causing outrage among the public and government officials. The government has formed a parliamentary committee to look into the deaths of Mackenzie’s followers as more information comes to light. There are also claims that some of the exhumed bodies are missing organs.
Another famous preacher Pastor Ezekiel of New Life Church was arrested with authorities exploring his connection to Mackenzie. He was later set free on a Ksh 1.5 million bail and the court has also frozen Ezekiel’s over 20 accounts for allegedly being linked to money laundering. The preacher claims to have lost Ksh 20 million following his arrest.
